The Truth About PetPortraits – How to Avoid a Disaster When Choosing an Artist
Welcome to this on demand class on How to Avoid a PetPortrait Disaster
People watch this video for many reasons. Some *when they consider commissioning a pet portrait fear the final portrait won’t be a true likeness of their pet. Some have great concerns that when they see the portrait for the first time they’ll almost recoil because there’s no emotional connection with the drawing – the artist has not picked up on all those personal nuances that you know so well. Some are unsure which artist is the best to choose: will they understand how incredibly emotional this journey is for you, after all, it’s your pet, and your relationship with them is an emotional and personal one.
And most fear that all their hard earnt savings will be spent on something that just isn’t perfect.
And most people don’t realize until later that what they’re really after is the emotional connection to the picture like they have with their pet.
Maybe you want to have a pet portrait with Emotional Resonance, A portrait that captures not just the physical likeness but the very soul of your pet, reminding you of the deep bond you shared.
Maybe you want to have a meticulously crafted tribute to your furry friend, ensuring every detail is just right. Maybe You Want to have a timelessness keepsake that’s designed to last that won’t fade with time.
Or perhaps you want lasting memory: To forever immortalize a moment in time with your pet, preserving the joy, love, and companionship they brought into your life.
And for some you want a daily reminder: the picture of your pet in your living space, offering comfort and a daily reminder of the joy they bring.
Or even lastly but not least you want a gift of love: To surprise a family member or friend with a heartfelt treasure that reflects their cherished relationship with their pet.
Because it’s essential that the artist you choose understands the profound connection between your pet and you as the owner, ensuring the final piece is not just a picture but a testament to that treasured bond.
Whatever your reason, we get it, and we’re here to support your journey every step of the way.
And this is going to be the most important video you’ll ever see because in this video, you’re about to discover simple ways you can make sure your pet portrait IS perfect and that it does have the emotional connection you want…without it turning into a disaster.
My name is Rob Ballentine and I’m a pet owner just like you.
I’ve drawn Lupo for Prince William and Kate Middleton – sponsored to them by Kate’s mum, Lady Gaga’s Gustav and Kelly Osbournes Polly and since I started drawing in 2020, I’ve drawn over 200 portraits in a couple of years and had our stand at the prestigious Crufts in 2023 – you see like you…
I know what it’s like to have a pet. We currently have a Cocker Spaniel, though before, a Gordon Setter. When he passed away we were devastated as a family and had no way of keeping those memories alive other than through photos, though they didn’t seem to bring him back to life – they were memories, but they weren’t a memorial to him and the absolute joy he brought to us all.
My journey as a pet portrait artist started by accident a few years ago and after my first portrait – it went crazy and I couldn’t do anything else because of all the commissions that were coming in! That’s when I switched professions from briefcase to canvas and pen to pencil.
As someone who owns a pet we get that deep bond you have – they’re a family member as much a child, in their own way.
And a portrait is a popular way to honour them as a forever memory. However, finding the right artist who can create a realistic portrait that won’t end up a disaster can be a daunting task: What if you go and pick it up and it’s awful? What if they haven’t captured that perfect little white spot on their head? What if it feels emotionless and worse what if it looks nothing like them?
One thing I know for sure is that one of the most common things that stops people from having a realistic pet portrait commissioned is the fear that it won’t look like them and they won’t feel that connection to them. The thought of the final result can leave you feeling totally unsure and perhaps stop you commissioning a portrait altogether! and miss out on the most valuable piece of art that will ever hang on your wall.
After all they’re your best friend, a beloved family member, your sidekick. And that fear can be even worse if you’ve already lost them.
Avoiding a disaster and getting the perfect pet portrait that will be a true likeness of them, and capture their true spirit and bond with YOU – you know that special part of them that only you know best – their heart and soul – is critical to the artist you choose.
I know how important it is to have a portrait that you emotionally connect with and that resonates with you. Most peoples biggest concern is whether the portrait will really resemble their pet: Slight deviations in expression or features can fail to capture their true likeness. Those things that make your pet unique can just end up as a ‘GENERIC breed image’ instead of that stunning portrait of YOUR pet that you imagined – and when you see the final portrait – there’s no connection to that drawing being them.
For two years my wife couldn’t put up photos of our dog Ripley as the loss was too unbearable for her. Until I gave her a gift… I drew a realistic portrait of him as a surprise. She had no idea, and on the day I surprised her with it, her reaction was unexpected…
I’d secretly framed it and hung it on the wall early one morning. Walking past the portrait, she stopped. Noticed. Turned and looked. She looked directly back at me and instantly burst into tears. Unable to move she stood sobbing into her hand staring at the picture. We all became emotional watching her. Then, while looking at the portrait she softly spoke three words… “He’s come home”.
And that is what a pet portrait should make you feel when it is perfect – it has emotional connection, it is personal and timeless and it makes you feel like they’re home.
Avoiding disaster with your pet portrait and making sure you get a picture that resonates deeply and has that emotional connection – and will bring them home – forever – is crucial to your commission.
Imagine – if it doesn’t look like them and doesn’t have those special markings that only you know, and that will look back at you with eyes that could be anyone’s pet, has fur that’s just not their colour, the background is overpowering, their nose is the wrong shape, the ears just aren’t right and you know what – it’s just not your pet.
Its not even the money you’ve spent really, its what you’re losing again, getting a petportrait is an emotional thing to do. I can’t explain it – but when people are at my door, they’re waiting – there’s this sense of anxiousness and anticipation, it’s in their eyes and when the box is pulled out, the lid slowly opened and the tissue parted, you see, you see so clearly that first wave of recognition that sweeps from their eyes down to the mouth. As they stare at the portrait their eyes glisten and sometimes the hands shake and they can’t speak.
They look back at you and that’s when you know – you know it – they see them, there in the portrait. They’ve seen them once again and you can see, they just want to reach in and hug the picture.
They close the tissue, wrap it ever so gently and put the lid back on. Because I know, they want to go home and sit down with a cup of tea and open it on their own in silence and let the waves of tears flow freely.
That’s when I know – I’m not just drawing a picture – you’re bringing home one of the most precious thing you have or perhaps even lost and will never have again. Something you’ve spent so many years talking to in private about silly things, the joy and laughter, the sadness and tears. You’re bringing home family.
So yeah – getting a petportrait right – it’s an important job.
And this is why you want to make sure that you get it right.
And I’m going to show you how to do it, and it’s not just about the artist you choose.
The key? Its about making sure you have the right reference photos.
You see, most people and artists think the reference photos are about the graphical quality of the photo itself, like is it high resolution, in focus and good colour balance.
While this helps, however the subject is more important than the quality of the photo. Out of focus or blurred is ok, or even a lowish resolution. A good artist should be able to work from them.
What you can’t ‘manipulate’ with any kind of software is what that photo means to you: the emotions surrounding the photo. This is what makes your pet and that photo meaningful, unique and emotional.
A great picture doesn’t always translate into a great portrait. Its more about looking for those qualities that make you resonate with the photo! And even have a stronger emotional connection to.
Sometimes a photo that may not be that great technically, has a story, a connection and special meaning: a particular moment in time that you connect with. I had one client send me around 30 photos and was fairly adamant on 2-3 of them, however, when we started to explore them and I asked a few certain questions – there was one in particular that we kept going back to. Its this one, where this chair was the chair he laid on every night, right above his Dad’s head. This is where, they had their moment and time together.
Was it ‘typical’ of a portrait photo – no? The stock standard pet portrait is a head with a little bit of neck, stuck on a plain background. Sometimes, a bokah background, but nevertheless, still just a head shot. It doesn’t really give you a story. This image of Booker curled up on his Dads chair said something that no other photo could.
So once you’ve got several photos that you want to choose from, ask yourself this question… “If I had to keep only one photo out of all of these, which one would it be, and why?”
And that’s probably going to be the photo for the portrait.
Now it may not be the only one. There maybe others that show off special markings or places, or toys, blankets and beds. Or even places where they liked to hang out, run or play. And these also have special meaning. Then its about chatting to your artist to get their expertise to help interpret them into the portrait for you. Ask questions, listen and talk with your artist and get their opinion.
Getting the reference photo right is probably the biggest and most important aspect of realising your emotional investment in having them drawn and brought back to you the way you imagined. Your portrait should tell the story of who they are.
I recommend getting between 5-10 photos that are your absolute favourite. Work with the artist and tell them the story of each one and why you chose them. This should help them determine not only why, but whether one or two have more of an emotional connection/story than others. This is key.
So do you want memories of when they were lively and full of life and energy, or perhaps when they were loving and full of cuddles, perhaps one where they showed off their personality or breed personality, or doing something stupid and fun.

While you might find petportraits in the UK and US, especially by mid-level artists, ranging from $100 to $500 for an A4 (8×12) size, high-end or specialized pieces can sometimes be over $1,000 and as much as $5,000. And those just starting out might even quote below $100 and that’s fine if that’s what you want.
If you were to compare it – a simple weekend getaway or a 4-month subscription to Cable or Satellite TV can easily cover the cost of an A4 (8×12 ) portrait.
When you hear “petportrait,” you might think of just picture, but with ours it’s like they’re still there with you while you’re watching Netflix or making a cuppa, you can almost hear them next to you.
What’s the real cost of a portrait if it doesn’t capture the soul of your pet or their true essence? Every penny you spend on our petportraits feels like you’ve made a tiny deposit into a bank of lifetime memories.
You know its easy to spend $500 to $1000 or even $2000 on a weekend out, a designer bag or suit, TV or new phone. And how long do those feelings last. A day? A week? Compare that to a lifetime of emotion, memories, and connection.
You can’t really put a price on love. Because as time goes by, memories fade. You get new ones, as the old fade away. Owning one of our pet portraits is having a piece of that time, forever at home, forever with you.

About Frame Size
Hi its Rob Ballentine here.
One of the questions I get asked a lot, especially when it comes to choosing a portrait is.
What size should I go for.
So I wanted to create this video for you, that’ll let you know what you should choose and why.
Because if you get this wrong – there’s no going back!
I. Why Size Matters in Pet Portraits
When it comes to choosing the size of your pet portrait, a number of factors come into play. Understanding why size matters helps you make a better decision that suits what you want and the space you have.
A. Emotional Impact of Size
The size of a pet portrait can have a big impact on the emotions it evokes. Larger portraits tend to create a more powerful and immersive experience. They can capture the intricate details of your pet’s features and expressions, making you feel closer to your pet.
For example, imagine a large A1-sized portrait of your pet hanging prominently in your living room. When you look at it, you’ll feel as if your pet is right there with you, because its pretty much a life sized portrait (unless of course you have a great Dane, horse or a tiger! This large size can give a strong emotional response because its so life-like in size and will bring back all those memories.
On the other hand, smaller sizes like A4 or A3 can be more intimate. They may not capture all the itsy bitsy fine details, but they’re perfect for a cozy nook in your bedroom or office. These smaller sizes create a sense of comfort and nostalgia, making you feel connected to your pet on a more personal level.
B. Recognizing Faces and Viewing Distance
We’re wired as humans to recognize faces, including those of our pets. The size of the portrait plays a crucial role in how effectively we can recognize and connect with these faces. When a portrait is too small, it may not do justice to your pet’s unique features and as such you hear a lot of people say – ‘awe so cute, but it doesn’t really feel like him’.
Consider the viewing distance in your space. If the portrait will be viewed from a distance and you want that big wow emotional response, then a larger size like A1 or A2 is preferable. This ensures that the details of your pet’s face remain clear and recognizable even from afar.
For example, in a spacious living room, an A1-sized portrait hung on a main wall can be appreciated from different places. So you can enjoy the portrait and recognize your pet’s face easily without straining your eyes.
However, if the portrait will be placed in a smaller room or a location where your close, such as a hallway or a home office, an A4 or A3 size is a great idea. These sizes are more intimate and can still capture your pet’s essence when viewed up close if detail is important to you.
C. Integration with Interior Design
The size of your pet portrait should also harmonize with your interior design style and layout. You’ll want your artwork to complement the overall aesthetics of your space rather than overpower it.
Consider the following scenarios:
1. Minimalist Design: If your home has a minimalist design with clean lines and lots of open space, a larger portrait is a great idea as a striking centre without overwhelming the simplicity of the design.
2. Eclectic or Bohemian Style: In a more eclectic or bohemian setting, you have room for creative expression. Smaller portraits can be clustered together, creating a gallery wall that’ll add charm and character to the space.
3. Traditional Decor: In a traditionally decorated room, a medium-sized portrait can blend seamlessly with classic furniture and ornate details, giving you that timeless feel.
To integrate your pet portraits effectively into your interior design, consider the colour palette of the artwork and the frame. Choose colors that complement or contrast with your existing decor to achieve a cohesive look.
Now that we’ve explored the “Why” of pet portrait size, we can move on to the next section: “What Size to Choose for Pet Portraits.”
II. What Size to Choose for Pet Portraits
Choosing the right size for your pet portraits depends on various factors, including the number of pets you want to feature and your artistic preferences.
A. A4, A3, A2, and A1 Sizes Explained
1. A4 (21 x 29 cm – 8×12 inches): This is a standard paper size and is considered small for pet portraits. It’s ideal for single pet portraits or close-up shots. A4 portraits are intimate and can fit well in smaller spaces or as part of a larger gallery wall.
2. A3 (29.7 x 42 cm – 12×16 inches): Slightly larger than A4, A3-sized portraits provide more room for detail and can accommodate either a single pet with more intricate features or a pair of pets. They work well in medium-sized rooms and can make a statement when framed and hung individually.
3. A2 (42 x 59.4 cm 24×32 inches): A2-sized portraits are larger and more versatile. They can accommodate multiple pets comfortably, allowing you to showcase a pair or even a trio of your furry friends. A2 portraits are suitable for larger rooms or as a standalone piece in a smaller space.
4. A1 (59.4 x 84.1 cm – 64 x 100 inches): A1-sized portraits are the largest and offer the most flexibility for showcasing multiple pets or capturing intricate details. These portraits are best suited for spacious areas, like living rooms, where they can serve as a focal point.
B. Number of Pets and Composition
The number of pets you want to have in your portrait plays an important role in working out the size that’s right for you.
1. Single Pet: If you have one pet and want to focus solely on them, you can choose a smaller size like A4 or A3. This allows you to highlight their features and personality effectively.
2. Pair of Pets: For two pets, A3 or A2 sizes work well. They provide enough space to showcase both animals comfortably without overcrowding the composition.
3. Three or More Pets: If you have three or more pets and want to include them all in one portrait, A2 or A1 sizes are recommended. These larger sizes offer sufficient canvas to capture each pet’s unique characteristics.
Frame Types and Colours
Frames make your pet portraits stand out. They can make or break a portrait and should be chosen carefully to complement the artwork and your interior design.
1. Frame Types:
– Traditional Wooden Frames: These work well with classic and rustic interior styles.
– Sleek Metal Frames: Ideal for modern and minimalist interiors.
– Ornate Frames: Add a touch of elegance to traditional or eclectic settings.
2. Frame Colours:
– Neutral Colours (e.g., black, white, or natural wood): Versatile and suitable for most interior styles.
– Contrasting Colours: Can make the frame stand out as an accent piece.
– Matching Colours: Create a cohesive look by matching the frame colour with other elements in the room.
So the size of your pet portrait should be worked out by the number of pets you want to have in it, your emotional connection to the artwork, and your interior design style.
It’s important to strike a balance between the size of the artwork, its composition, and its integration into your living space.
III. How to Determine the Right Size and Frame for Your Space
Choosing the perfect size and frame for your pet portraits involves a combination of practical considerations, personal preferences, and artistic goals. In this section, we’ll delve into the steps you can take to ensure your pet portraits enhance your living space.
A. Measuring Available Wall Space
1. Measure Wall Dimensions: Start by measuring the wall space where you intend to hang the pet portrait. Note the width and height of the area, and consider any surrounding furniture, windows, or other decor elements.
2. Consider Placement: Think about the placement of your pet portrait within the room. Do you want it to be a focal point on a blank wall, or should it fit among existing artwork and decor?
3. Spacing: Ensure you leave some space around the portrait for it to breathe. The amount of spacing can vary depending on your personal style, but typically, a few inches of clearance on each side works well.
B. Considering Room Style and Layout
1. Interior Design Style: Think about the overall style of your room. Is it modern, traditional, minimalist, or eclectic? Choose a pet portrait size and frame that complements this style.
2. Room Layout: Think about the layout of the room and where you’ll view it. Consider the seating arrangement and how the portrait will be viewed from various angles within the room.
3. Lighting: Assess the lighting in the room. Make sure that the portrait is well-lit, either by natural light or strategically placed artificial lighting. Proper illumination can enhance the impact of the artwork.
C. Personal Preferences and Artistic Goals
1. Emotional Connection: Consider your emotional connection to the pet or pets in the portrait. Do you want the artwork to evoke strong emotions or provide a subtle reminder of your furry friends?
2. Artistic Expression: Are you looking for a highly detailed, realistic portrait, or do you prefer a more abstract or stylized representation of your pets?
3. Gallery Wall vs. Standalone: Decide whether you want the pet portrait to be a standalone piece of art or part of a larger gallery wall. This choice can influence the size and framing options.
D. Placement and Lighting
1. Eye Level: Hang the pet portrait at eye level for optimal viewing. This typically means the centre of the artwork should be at the viewer’s eye level, which is around 57-60 inches from the floor.
2. Natural Light: If possible, place the portrait where it can benefit from natural light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can damage the artwork, but indirect natural light can enhance the colours and details.
3. Artificial Lighting: If natural light is limited, consider using wall sconces or picture lights to illuminate the portrait. These can create a dramatic effect and draw attention to the artwork.
You can work out the ideal size and frame for your pet portraits from what we’ve talked about. Ensuring they not only reflect your emotional connection to your pets but also enhance the aesthetics of your living space.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and your choices should align with your personal style and preferences.
One big tip.
So I highly recommend getting a tape measure and a bit of cardboard out and cutting it to the size you think you want and where it’ll hang and then draw a superfluous outline of your pet (or stick a pic on it!) and hang it on your wall.
So if you’re serious about a pet portrait, you’ll probably want to hear about this…
I know how important it is to have a portrait that you emotionally connect with and that resonates with you.
And if you’re serious about having the memories of your pet kept forever, that tell the story of your pet, you’re really going to love my Realism PetPortraits.
